written by: Lance Powell w/ research material by DBM

Part 3: GETTING IT ON PAPER: Creating your Reference Database/list

Directions: Now that you have a reference prospect list, sort it selecting those who can provide different perspectives on your work, achievements, etc. Next, compile them in a format that will be easy for you to retrieve when you have a specific purpose to satisfy and that is reader-friendly for the interviewer. Be sure to check addresses and phone numbers to make sure they are current. If your reference has an e-mail address, you may wish to include it. On the following pages, write a brief summary for each reference so that a potential employer understands your relationship to each one.

Note: You need not give the entire reference database to every potential employer. Select a list that will best represent you for each given situation. You will have made sure that each person selected will support and bolster you by contacting them (see next section). The list you provide to the company interested in your services should be no longer than one page.
