Creating
a Portfolio
Students tend
to put everything they have ever done on their reel and/or portfolio;
this can actually work against them.
Companies like seeing good work whether it is motion, lighting,
design, or effects. Realize that companies receive about 50-100
reels and/or portfolios a week, so a concise, well-designed presentation
is the best.
The Portfolio
should convey a sense of professionalism through the quality of
the printed or sketched image. Remember to submit 8.5" by 11"
Copies Only. Do Not send Originals,
since most places will not return them to you. If hand drawn,
the images chosen should be the best of your best, 8 to 10 images
are usually enough to inform the viewer with the level of your
visual skills.
If in doubt,
ask the HR department if they want a portfolio at the time of
your reel and resume submission...different companies want different
things, and at times companies do not wish to look at porfolios.
A simple black
book centers the viewer's attention on your work, and not your
ability to produce crafts. Keep it simple and
make sure to showcase your best, remember this: quality over quantity.
